Properties and Phenomena

Description of Properties and Phenomena and how to encode them

Introduction

A Feature is generally defined in ISO 19109 and ISO 19101 as a thing that carries characteristics, or in other words that has properties. A property is always related to one feature. Feature is a component of an observation. Example of a Feature are  sea water or Monterey Bay. Properties are sometimes called Phenomena in OGC.

Best Practice:  Use the Climate and Forecast (CF) standard name parameter vocabulary[1] whenever possible. URL encodings for the CF parameters can be found at the MMI registry [2]. An example of a parameter encoded this way is:

http://mmisw.org/ont/cf/parameter/sea_surface_wind_wave_significant_height

[1] CF Parameter names: http://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/
[2] CF vocabulary in browser: http://mmisw.org/ont/cf/parameter?form=html

TIP:

Simply add the basename of the MMI CF parameter ontology before the standard name:  http://mmisw.org/ont/cf/parameter/

Best Practice:

Within OGC you can specify complex phenomena. We encourage to not define complex phenomena and specify simple scalars, like the ones provided by the Cf conventions.
