Matrix SOS - WFS

Meeting 20080229

Participants Gerry Creager, Tony Cook, Charlton Galvarino, Matthew Howard, Eric Bridger, Donna Cote, Mark Wholey, Luis Bermudez

Minutes

  • Follow up on tasks: http://oostethys-trac.tamu.edu/oostethys/report/10:

Most of the tasks were change due next week. Most of us where in the Q2O meeting and some on vacation. Summary of tasks: http://oostethys-trac.tamu.edu/oostethys/report/10 Tasks regarding the road maps and goals for each component were assigned to a component leader, we should have a more complete draft in 2 weeks. The OOSTethys community document should help frame each component goal. Matt H. volunteered with Luis to work on the controlled vocabularies documentation.

  • WFS vs SOS - Stop development and concentrate on cleaning and writing

Due to the recent NOOA IOOS news about SOS, we should concentrate on providing SOS for other types of data. It was agreed to stop WFS development now and concentrate on documentation.

  • Discussion about NOOA IOOS announcement and overlapping goals with OOSTethys. Concentrate our efforts on the data provider development vs improving other components. http://www.oostethys.org/development/proposals_oostethys/provide-support-for-other-various-types-of-marine-obaservations/

We should make available other data, such as ADCP, ship and drifter (e.g. http://www.horizonmarine.com/ioos/seacoos.png) data via SOS. A visualizer should know how to plot the data that is being encoded. For example profile plots vs time series plots. This should be discussed in more detail next week after more discussions via the list.

  • Others:

Lei Hu (Dauphin Island Sea Lab) showed interest in working on an ASP version of SOS. Mark Wholey (ASA) said he was working on a .net version. Matt Howard showed interest. Matt will continue to talk with Mark to see if ASA work could be used and do not replicate the work.

Meeting 20080215

Participants David Forrest, Tony Cook, Charlton Galvarino, Jeff deLaBeaujardiere, Philip Bogden, John Graybeal, Ben Domenico, Luis Bermudez

Minutes

During the call today, Luis closed out a ticket on improving the trac system, but we deferred several other tickets to next week.  We also added a few about developing the goals of OOSTethys at the end of the meeting. The tasks we have for next week are copied below, but are probably more nicely formatted on the trac site at http://oostethys-trac.tamu.edu/oostethys/query?status=new&status=assigned&status=reopened&milestone=2008-02-29&order=owner

We really need some volunteers to take ownership over developing goals and roadmaps for the various OOSTethys components.

Also, there are quite a few open tickets that were not discussed today because they are attached to other Trac milestones, so we'll try to touch on those next week.  If you can clear any tickets, or have any comments or additions, please email back or make updates to the track site yourself

Minutes

Charlton: Map Server is up to SOS 1.0 and doing the SWE data block. It is still a beta version. He will check if other than KVP are allowed in Map Server. GML filters are used in Map Server using KVP. KVP is not defined in the 1.0 SOS spec. He will add Map server SOS add to the WFS SOS matrix.

Eric - Is updating the client to be able to handle different SOS versions. He confirmed the good news about very soon Dave Coyle making available USGS NWS data via SOS. He will add the exceptions to the WFS SOS matrix

Tony - He pointed out that the cookbooks is not yet supporting Bounding box queries in the getObservation request. Need to create an observationOffering which encapsulates all the observations to be able to make the query.

We also need to create an OOSTethys aggregator that could make some of the data available via aggregated observations. For example latest from all the providers. As a first step we will try to implement in the data provider side an observation that aggregates all the observations.

Topics

Review IE Experiment Status

  • Review status of server work (TAMU has agreed to contract with DM Solutions to enhance Mapserver to support time filters which will allow historical WFS queries for the IE. The hope is to take this implementation back to the WFS WG as an example of how this can be done. Mark to forward a copy of the schema that the NOAA CSC is using in their WFS server that supports historical time-series queries. Arthur working to encode the MADIS NetCDF data into TML.)
  • Review status of client testing work(Eric starting work on WFS client. Has implemented simple client using TAMUs WFS. Will be extending that to the other test scenarios over the next weeks. It has been decided that SOS client testing will be done against the OOSTethys reference server instead of Mapserver's SOS because the OOSTethys server uses a newer version of SOS. In addition, the SOS Map on OpenIOOS.org now makes use of the OOSTethys Registry to generate a list of servers to display.)

Review Status of Other IE or OOSTethys activities

  • Sensor data into TML / SML (Arthur working on encoding MADIS NetCDF data into TML)
  • Semantic mediation (Luis working on automatically generating ontologies from the Registry to allow OpenIOOS to filter servers by Platform. Luis and John will generate a "How does this work" example to put up on OOSTethys.org)
    • Luis asked in email for categories and URIs on certain SOS services
  • Registry standards
    • Use of CSW (Manil/Helen have concluded that they should use ISO19115 for the OOSTethys Registry. They have a reference implementation of this but it uses spatial data only, so they have to figure out how to adapt it.)
< li>Simple Registry for WFS / SOS (OOSTethys Registry now supports registration of WFS servers as well)
    • Support for TML DescribeSensor response (This hasn't started yet because Arthur has been working on the server side first)

Review Status of Other IE or OOSTethys activities

  • Sensor data into TML / SML (Tony published an updated SML template that takes the SML down closer to the sensor level )
  • Semantic mediation (Gerry, Tony (TAMU), Helen, Manil (UAH) and Luis (MBARI) had a meeting about how to implement discovery services in the registry. The info is here: http://www.oostethys.org/development/semantic-mediation)
  • Registry standards
    • Use of CSW/EBRIM (Manil and Helen (UAH) are looking for a "community standard" for how EBRIM should be implemented to be most interoperable. It is desirable for OOSTethys to use OGC standards for the registry if feasible.)
  • Simple Registry for WFS / SOS
    • Support for TML DescribeSensor response(Manil (UAH) is waiting for Arthur (Argon) to send him a sample TML response and ideally a document comparing TML / SML. Arthur has been traveling so Manil may not receive this until Arthur's return.)

Review IE Experiment Status

  • Review status of servers (Mark (ASA) has WFS server available serving hycom currents, gfs, nam winds. ASA's server also supports TIME filter capabilities that enable time-series queries. Charlton (TAMU) is talking with DM Solutions about the possibility of implementing the same capability in Mapserver.)
  • Review status of client testing work (Mark (ASA) tested their WFS server with the GAIA2 and Udig clients successfully. In addition, he successfully tested the Columbia WFS server with GAIA2 and GAIA3 clients. TAMU)

Review Status of Other IE or OOSTethys activities

  • Sensor data into TML / SML (This work will likely begin again once Arthur (Argon) returns from California in August.)
  • Semantic mediation ()
  • Registry standards
    • Use of CSW (Manil (UAH) attended a conference involving CSW and has a better handle on what's involved in implementing CSW on the OOSTethys Registry. In particular, he spent time with someone who had implemented EBRIM. He is going to talk to Helen (UAH project lead) about whether they're willing to take on the required level of effort which appears to be substantial.)
  • Simple Registry for WFS / SOS
    • Support for TML DescribeSensor response (Manil (UAH) looked into TML to see what would be involved in making the OOSTethys Registry accept a TML response to DescribeSensor. Manil looking for whether a consolidated document exists that compares the differences between TML and SML. Manil will pursue this with Arthur (Argon).)

Review IE Experiment Status

  • Review status of servers and Tony / Charlton experience to-date bringing up SOS and WFS servers for the same dataset using Mapserver (ASA bringing up WFS server developed for NOAA. It will be serving from NetCDF files so they could incorporate the same dataset TAMU is using from MADIS. TAMU serving up MADIS data for GoMOOS buoy A but has had Mapserver issues which the Mapserver developers are fixing. TAMU is now serving the data from a database instead of NetCDF in order to enable serving of time series data easier.)
  • Review status of client testing work (ASA used their GAIA3 client to bring up TAMU dataset successfully via WFS. GAIA3 had trouble with Columbia's WFS server. GetCapabilities worked but couldn't get layers. The ASA server had the same problem. Mark believes this is because GAIA3 is using a newer schema. ASA server worked with GAIA2 client which was using the older schema. Mark will test GAIA2 against Columbia. )
  • Incorporating TML into OCEANS IE (Action items noted under "Open Tasks" above. Charlton to send Arthur Perl code for parsing the MADIS NetCDF file or work with Arthur to give him the data in a different format.)

Review Status of Other IE or OOSTethys activities

  • Sensor data into TML / SML (See TML section under "Open Tasks" above for details on how we're approaching this)
  • Semantic mediation
    • Use of CF Data Types question (Charlton has a workaround. Luis sent the question to the CF list. David sent details on this issue in an email to the OOSTethys list)
  • Registry standards
    • Use of CSW (Manil will attend CSW meeting on July 17. Will provide feedback and recommendations after that meeting)
  • Simple Registry for WFS / SOS
    • Support for TML DescribeSensor response (UAH to evaluate effort to make OOSTethys Registry support SOS servers that supply a TML response to DescribeSensor. This is needed to allow Argon's server to be registered and to support TML within the OCEANS IE.)
    • Incompatibilities between OOSTethys Registry and SOS 1.0 spec (Argon to document the incompatibilities caused by the Registry's use of the 0.31 spec)

Review IE Experiment Status

  • Review status of servers and Tony / Charlton experience to-date bringing up SOS and WFS servers for the same dataset using Mapserver (WFS and SOS servers available serving SST data for GoMOOS buoy A. This data is coming from MADIS via LDM in NetCDF format. WFS server is Mapserver, SOS is Tony's custom SOS but will be Mapserver eventually. Philip noted that we need to be aware that this may not be the final QC'ed data because the source organization (GoMOOS in this case) may edit historical data and these changes may not propagate to NDBC and MADIS. Tony and Charlton will be working on support for time-series data next.)
  • Review status of client testing work (Eric has made progress on a Perl client and will hopefully post the source to it next week. Hopefully by next week's call we'll begin to have the first feedback about experience accessing data from the different servers.)

Review Status of Other IE or OOSTethys activities

  • Sensor data into TML / SML (John is pushing forward with sensor inventory in order to assess which to encode in SML/TML (e.g. most common, most complicated?). SML is primarily for use with OOSTethys clients/servers, TML is of interest to Argon)
  • Semantic mediation (Luis raised the question about what to do about CF variables where we want to use the CF data types but not necessarily the CF units. There is a question about whether the MADIS file we're using is CF compatible. Data type in question is pressure tendency which seems to have units that are either ambiguous or inappropriate. John / Luis will take this question to the CF community [Jonathan?])
  • Registry standards (We ran out of time before this agenda item was discussed)
  • Simple Registry for WFS / SOS (UAH has added the ability to register a WFS GetCapabilities URL in the OOSTethys registry, but no metadata except URL and protocol type (i.e. WFS) is stored. There was a lot of discussion about what should be the minimum level of metadata required from a GetCapabilities response in order to be useful. Luis advocated for us creating an "OOSTethys compatible" GetCap response for WFS so that at a minimum platform types are identified. This would be in support of the existing OOSTethys use cases. The issue is that this makes it so that you cannot register GetCap URLs that are legitimate WFS/SOS URLs but don't conform to OOSTethys encodings. This issue is going to be referred to Gerry Creager and Carl Reed for their opinions)

Review Status of Other IE or OOSTethys activities

  • Time parameters to SOS (This will be explored more through Experiment #1)
  • Semantic mediation (Luis will publish list of OOSTethys SOS servers that aren't correctly encoding Platform info correctly. John and Luis recommended moving forward with the definition of how to encode sensor level metadata into our SML. Tony volunteered to support them in this. Arthur volunteered to provide support the with doing the same for TML.)
  • Registry standards (There was a discussion about which CSW standard to use - EBRIM or ISO19115. Carl sent contacts for each to Helen and Helen will follow up to make a recommendation. Gerry's recommendation was ISO19115. It was noted that currently the OOSTethys Registry only works with SOS, so cannot serve as a unified registry for Experiment #1. Helen will look into how easy it would be to create a simplistic registry that can take both SOS and WFS GetCapabilities URLs and minimal other metadata (at least protocol type) so we can have a single registry for Experiment #1.)

Review IE Experiment Details

  • Review Servers and Clients list - Arthur to investigate additional WFS clients. TAMU has a WFS client we can use.
  • Who will test which clients with which servers - establish test matrix - For each client, test against a minimum of 2-3 servers. Evaluation criteria for "ease of access" will be amount of development time required to produce list of output data in columns. For aggregation example, aggregate data by sensor type. Rough timeline - five weeks to stand up servers, test clients, document conclusions.

Review Status of Other IE or OOSTethys activities

  • Semantic mediation - Luis - OOSTethys servers' SensorML responses missing platform, sensor metadata in some cases. Luis will send email about what cases we're doing it and not doing it in. Luis will use MMI ontology as basis for vocabulary.
  • Registry standards - Tony sent spec for CSW to Manil. It's pretty beefy. Carl will send Manil information on OGC members doing registration work that might help guide Manil's work.

  • Potential other WFS/SOS accessible observation data sources (Many servers / clients identified - will document on to-be-created OGC IE page on OOSTethys.org)
  • Roles of IE team participants / observers in the experiment (In addition to participants standing up servers, Eric from GoMOOS will port OOSTethys client to WFS, Tony will contribute client-side work using Space Time Toolkit and Arthur will help on client development as well)

Other IE or OOSTethys activities to move forward in parallel

  • Semantic mediation (Luis to document current platform and sensor data he has and will produce an outine of steps to move semantic mediation work forward to the point where we can begin incorporating into experiments)
  • Registry standards (Manil will work with Tony to evaluate CSW/WRS for use with OOSTethys registry. Tony to clarify whether CSW/WRS are same thing or different.)

Aggregator

Should the visualizer contact the Data Provider or the agregator ? Is the new definition posted by Gerry satisfying everybody ?
Gerry will complete the definition.

Vector Data

See email John Graybeal - May 3rd. Use vector components, don’t worry about expressing the components relation in the SOS service. Maybe we can use the ontology to do this ? thoughts ? Maybe SOS provides the mechanism. Tony will check. Maybe we are constraint by the CF terminology ?

OGC IE and OOSTethys relation

We could merge both initiatives, making our life easier. This means OOSTethys will prioritize its tasks based on what could be important for the OGC IE. This also means more people in the telecons discussing some times, my guess is very few times, topics that we were not incline to work on ( for example WFS ). This also means more visibility to OOSTethys and possible international collaborations. Is up to us.
Nobody objected. Telecons will be Friday 8:00 pacific. Wiki to be use is OOSTethys. Tomorrow Gerry will talk more about it in the OGC telecon. It is possible to get an extension of the IE, similar to what occurred in Galeon.

Publications

We should concentrate on a peer reviewd publication that we can submit at the end of the Oceans IE, as well as on an EOS publication. Oceans abstract is good as it is.

Meeting 20070326

Participants: Donna Cote, Gerry Creager, David Forrest, Helen Conover, Tony Cook, Manil Maskey, Luis Bermudez.

Purpose: Short meeting to discuss mapping and VINE

We decided the following about Data Providers semantics for phenomena:

  • They should have URIs for phenomena related terminology and should map them to CF
  • If there is no CF match, then OOSTethys will create one term they can match to. This new term in OOSTethys will be map with other vocabularies (e.g. IOOS and GCMD); However, we will encourage the data provider to contact the CF list for an addition of a term.

Luis - will send an email to Eric about portal functionalities, related to the following:

  • The portal should have a portal vocabulary (could be GCMD)
  • The portal should communicate with an aggregator that is responsible to cache some metadata about the services. Some of this metadata is the category at which they correspond. For example: the aggregator will contact the semantic mediator to see what GCMD term corresponds to a parameter URI that is an output of an SOS observation.

Open tasks before September 28

  • [Gerry] 20070525 - Stand up WFS / SOS server with MADIS data
    • Server is set up, testing is ongoing. Charlton has arranged for DM Solutions to produce a time-filter based historical query mechanism in Mapserver's WFS server. Waiting on timing of when this will be available.
    • Because the SOS version implemented in Mapserver is older than that of the OOSTethys reference server, the OOSTethys reference server is going to be used for testing unless/until the SOS 1.0 spec is published and Mapserver is updated to it.
  • [Tony, Eric, Mark] 20070615 - Begin to move forward with client testing
  • [Tony] 20070615 - Move forward with WFS support within the Space / Time Toolkit - THIS IS GOING TO BE AN ONGOING TASK
  • [Arthur] 20070706 - Integrating TML into the OCEANS IE
    • [Arthur, Charlton] Feed MADIS data to Argon so they can serve the same data in SOS / TML as TAMU is serving in SOS / SML. - COMPLETE
    • [Charlton, Arthur] Bring up 2nd SOS / TML server at TAMU.
    • [Eric, Tony, Arthur] Work with Arthur to incorporate testing of SOS / TML servers into client testing work. Arthur to supply client or code stub for parsing TML data
    • [Arthur] Argon will test both TML and SML servers during their client testing work
    • [Helen, Manil] Consider enhancing the registry to support a TML response to DescribeSensor to allow Argon to register their TML SOS server.
  • [Tom, Gerry] 20070629 - Create document template for capturing lessons learned in SOS / WFS comparison.
  • [John] 20070629 - Create a page to list the sensor data we know about and where the gaps are - goal is to get observations referenced to proper sensor rather than platform in our SML and TML - IN PROGRESS HERE.
  • [Manil- Helen] 20070601 - Evaluate standard interfaces that we are going to support for the registry. Evaluate CSW (EBRIM / ISO19115) for potential use.
    • It appears that IS19115 is much easier to implement and more suitable. Manil has a sample implementation of this and is proceeding with the evaluation of how best to integrate this into the OOSTethys Registry.
  • [Arthur] 20070706 - Document incompatibilities caused by the OOSTethys Registry's use of the 0.31 SOS spec vs. the 1.0 spec currently available
  • [Luis] 20070817 - Integrate semantic mediation as required to allow SOS Map to filter by Platform Type
