Encodings Interoperability

Considering issues of interoperating across multiple SOS encoding formats.

Goal

Define SWE Common encodings for vertical profiles , horizontal profiles and trajectories that:

  • provide all the information required for accurate plotting of the data
  • are simple and easy to publish
  • are simple and easy to read
  • are optimize for minimum size, reduce accessing time

Road Map

  • identify data sources for vertical profiles

  • create templates for vertical profiles
  • implement SOS services with vertical profiles
  • test by client

The discussion of KML and Observations & Measurements should be a broader OGC discussion. There has been some talk about this topic in the SWE WG context. KML was designed as a visualization language for earth browser systems. The discussion has been how much KML can actually support O&M from a sensor context (beyond visualizing sensor location). This is an important discussion, so let's include the SWE DWG community in this discussion. Best practices on how to use KML and SOS would be very useful: what works, what doesn't, strengths, limitations, etc.

This topic also relates to the "KML encoding of SOS" topic.
