OSIE-2 PUCK telecon notes: 5/5/2009

— filed under:

OSIE-2 PUCK telecon notes

Participants:

Neil Cater, Kent Headley, Eric Davis, Joaquin del Rio, Greg Johnson, Tom O'Reilly

Agenda and notes:

1. Technical approach for individual test-beds. What will be in the PUCK payload (IEEE-1451 TEDS, SensorML?)

MI approach will be to modify Axys Watchman software to utilize PUCK-enabled instruments (as opposed to installing SIAM). MI has Axys development kit; drivers apparently get implemented in 'C'. Note that MI may be hiring a software engineer shortly. In addition, Neil will work with Frank to get Axys involved if possible; this would expedite PUCK integration. Eric notes that MI currently uses SBE-37SM, Nortek Aquadopp, and WETLabs (model?); these all can be PUCK-enabled by manufacturer. In addition, MI plans to buy an RBR XR420. Eric will ask Nortek about PUCK firmware. PUCK-enabled system will be deployed a few hundred meters offshore this summer. Specific PUCK payload contents TBD.

UPC will extend their current IEEE-1451/OGC-SWE prototype to use PUCK protocol. The NCAP will periodically interrogate serial port for PUCK (e.g. by sending PUCK 'soft break'), as for PUCK uuid, thus detecting new instrument plug-in.

2. Development schedule and milestones

27 May 2009: Demonstrate PUCK with UPC OBSEA lab test-bed

July 2009: MI buoy deployment with PUCK-enabled instruments and infrastructure

11 December 2009: OGC Technical Committee meeting, Mountain View, CA (http://www.opengeospatial.org/event/0912tc). Submit PUCK as proposed OGC standard

3. Plans for O'Reilly's visit to Bremen and Vilanova

Delory, del Rio, Frank Johnson, Zedlitz will be at Oceans09. Note that UPC activity will be focused on OBSEA deployment week of 18 May; O'Reilly could make progress on integration during that week, and hope to demonstrate the following week.

4. Coordination with other OSIE-2 projects (e.g. IEEE-1451/OGC-SWE harmonization)

There is overlap between PUCK and Eric Delory's harmonization project, in that the PUCK payloads should be compliant with either IEEE-1451.0 or with SWE.

5. Other items?

Telecon schedule - once a week at least for now sounds good. O'Reilly to schedule next telecon.
