OSIE-2 PUCK telecon notes: 7/14/2009

Here are my notes from today's telecon. - T.O'R.

Agenda:

1. Status from Newfoundland (Reo, Neil, Eric Davis, RBR)
The Newfoundland, RBR and Axys teams have formulated a new integration plan

2. Status from Germany (Christoph, Klaus, Jesper)
SEND Offshore Electronics plans to implement PUCK in a digital compass.

3. Status from Spain (Joaquin)

4. News from NSF OOI Cyber-infrastructure (Tom)
The NSF OOI Cyber-infrastructure project has specified PUCK as a standard
protocol for RS-232 OOI instruments.

5. Other items?

Action items from this meeting:

1. Determine possible demonstration dates and venues, distribute to team for comment - O'Reilly

2. Finalize plans for Axys participation in OSIE-2 - Cater, Philips

3. UPC to distribute information on IFREMER smart module - Del Rio

4. Schleisiek to send information on IEEE 1451 status from Brest workshop

5. Team to consider standardized PUCK payloads

Attendees: Headley, del Rio, Philips, Toma, Waldmann, Johnson, Cater, Schleisiek, O'Reilly

CW: Just returned from China, "Ocean University" in Tsingdao. There's a group working on ocean sensor networks. They are interested to join this group. No update on Jesper and Klaus; Jesper is very involved in 1451.2. Klaus is ready to integrate hardware(?). Two students from UPC working on IEEE-1451

TO: OOI wants to use PUCK for RS-232.
GJ: RS-485 is problematic.

NC: Buoy is waiting for deployment vessel - maybe in a week or so?
We want a "live" demonstration. We plan to run both a RBR controller as well as Axys controller. (RBR "data logger" and Watchman 500). Instruments will be swapped between both controllers. Data via RF.
How will data be distributed to the net? Perhaps on SmartBay site. How many ports available for PUCK on each controller? One spare serial port for PUCK?

RP: Axys schedule: very busy right now - difficult over the next 2-3 months. Maybe mid-September.

NC: May not be acceptable. Will talk with Don Bryan about this. Please provide a firm schedule in the next day or so.

RF: Will do that today.

KH: Is there value in swapping between non-PUCK-aware controller and PUCK-aware controller?
TO, NC, GJ - pretty subtle, not really too compelling.

Two PUCK-enabled instruments for demo; Nortek and RBR
Two ports on RBR controller
1 or 2 ports on Axys

First round of SmartBay demo - use just PUCK header, UUID

O'Reilly - find a firm demo date and venue
September is possible (Venice), as is December OGC meeting in Mountain View
Work with Reichardt, Bermudez on this.

ED: December is very cold.
TO: Could do lab demo in December
RF: Could provide demo for lab demo

GJ: Nortek is going to supply PUCK-enabled Aquadopp, gratis for demo
RF: Could update to PUCK on our Aquadopp for demo

Interoperable PUCK payloads

JdR: Shahram and Dan in IFREMER a few weeks ago with Yves. Trying to develop standard hardware to connect different serial instruments to IFREMER network. Will enable 1451, 1588. Would use "smart modules" to interconnect instruments on cabled observatory. Hopefully will accommodate PUCK-enabled instruments. Will send summary of smart modules, schema from IFREMER. They will have first hardware version in September, which will incorporate 1588, 1451. Will have special session in November MARTECH workshop. MBARI could participate.

KS: Returned from Brest, has Yves' hardware board, which will be commercialized. Not clear if it recognizes PUCK protocol; it is programmable? Also discussions regarding 1451 standardization. All agree that 1451 "as is" is too heavy-weight; so IFREMER is discussing what subset of 1451 is important for oceanographic sensors. SEND will implement PUCK in digital compass, which will be used for rotation counter. PUCK-1451 demonstrator should be built. "Luminarie" has been bought by Texas Instruments. No schedule for PUCK implementation yet; maybe another six weeks or so.
